One of the main events orgranized by the joint Multicultural Services Committees of the Peninsula Library System(PLS) and Silicon Valley Library System (SVLS) is a biennial Multicultural Entertainment Extravaganza (MEE). This is a unique opportunity for multicultural performers to showcase their talents at a forum emphasizing cultural and ethnic diversity.
The audience is made up of librarians, teachers, and activity directors from community centers, parks and recreation departments from around the Bay Area. The last Multicultural Entertainment Extravaganza was held at the Mission City Center for Performing Arts in Santa Clara.
What is the Multicultural Entertainment Extravaganza (MEE)?
Every two years the SVLS/PLS Multicultural Committee is responsible for preparing a multicultural showcase. The committee gathers information about local Bay Area multicultural artists who have performed in libraries and scouts for upcoming talent that would like to be introduced to performing for library audiences.
How much time will I be given to showcase?
You will be given 10 minutes to showcase your talents as a multicultural performer. Most performers prepare a sampling of their abilities and also provide a brief description as to how their performance is culturally significant.
What are the advantages of participating?
Public libraries are a great place to showcase your talents and librarians are always looking for new and talented multicultural artists for special programs. During special months, libraries may set up performances to celebrate Chinese New Year, Cinco de Mayo, and/or Black History Month. You are auditioning for a group of people who will see you, and possibly book you in the future at thier library.
Will I be paid for my participation in MEE?
No, you will not be paid for a 10 minute audition. The goal is that your audition will lead to future bookings.
Who is the audience for MEE?
The audience primarily made up of librarians, teachers and community center directors.
When is the next MEE?
The next MEE will be held on Saturday, October 24th from 9:30am to 3:00pm. The event will be held at the Mission City for Performing Arts Center (located next to Wilcox High School) in Santa Clara.
