MEE09 Cancelled – Performer Line Up Available

The Multicultural Entertainment Extravaganza that was to be held tomorrow October 24th at the Mission City Center for Performing Arts has been cancelled due to low audience registration.

Those librarians that did register for the event will receive the 6th Multicultural Entertainment Extravaganza Performer Line Up containing each performer’s contact information. This list will also be distributed to the different library systems that are part of the Pacific Library Partnership.

CHILES – Resource for Library Staff

I just got an email from the REFORA listserv about this new online resource called “CHILES” – Children and Libraries en Español. The website contains a wealth of info about all sorts of topics aimed at library staff that work with Spanish speaking children and/or their parents. The website has common Spanish phrases and pronunciation guides, as well as examples of community outreach and programming for children.

Celebrate Dia!

Dia is right around the corner again. Thanks to San Mateo County Library, especially Armando Ramirez, Lucia M. Gonzalez will be traveling all over the Bay Area visiting local libraries for El Dia de los Ninos/El Dia de los Libros celebrations. Lucia is the 1994 Pura Belpre award winning author of The Bossy Gallito and her most recent book The Storyteller’s Candle/La velita de los cuentos was named a Bura Belpre Honor book for 2009. She will be visiting libraries in San Mateo County, South San Francisco Library, and in the South Bay, Milpitas Library.

MEE09 Update!

The date has been set for MEE09 – Saturday, October 24th! The committee has decided to use the Mission City for Performing Arts in Santa Clara as its venue. We are also in the process of updating registration websites and promotional materials. Check back in a couple of weeks for more information regarding MEE09.

The committee also had its bimonthly meeting today and Armando Ramirez from SMCL gave us a quick summary of two local authors that visited San Mateo County schools in collaboration with SMCL. Viola Canales, author of The Tequila Worm, and Francisco Alarcon author of several bilingual poetry books for children, gave presentation to local schools about succeeding in school and in life.

BPLG Spanish Book Fair

I just got an email promoting the annual bookfair organized by Biblioectas Para La Gente, the Nothern California chapter of REFORMA. It’s going to be held at San Francisco Main Public Library on Friday, February 27, 2009.

I’ve been to this book fair and it’s especially helpful when you haven’t been able to make to FIL. Last year, Brodart gave away a listing of the Best from Guadalajara and it was a great tool to have on hand. Plus, there is all the networking and ideas that you get when talking with other selectors.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be in SF this year. Anybody else going???

Author Vists!

At today’s meeting the committee discussed the possibility of generating a list local multicultural authors who have visited public libraries in the bay area. The committee had a short list of authors who have visited thier communities recently.

Yuyi Morales was a guest presenter for the community libraries of San Mateo County’s El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) celebration.

Mitali Perkins visited in Milpitas Library (Santa Clara County Library System) in September 2007 to discuss her book Rickshaw Girl with a group of upper elementary and middle school children. Mitali discussed her book, brought in some canvas bags, and showed the group how to make alpana designs.

Gene Yang, author of American Born Chinese, also visited the Milpitas TeenReads book club in Feburary 2007.

East Side Dreams

Art Rodriguez, author of East Side Dreams, is currently part of the Teen Summer Reading program at SCCL. He visited Gilroy Library on July 5th and will vist Campbell Library on July 12th, Saratoga Library on July 19th, and Morgan Hill Library on July 24th.

Learn about several innovative programs designed to increase access to health information for Spanish speakers and increase community health. Guest speakers include: Susan Dalmas, manager of Queens Library/ Adult Learner Program; Kathel Dunn, Associate Director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region; and Loida Garcia-Febo, Assistant Coordinator, Special Services, Queens Library.
